The BMW GS Big Dog Ride is billed as the 'world's highest, toughest BMW GS motorcycle event. 'Not a rally nor a race, the 'Divide Ride' or 'Rocky Mountain Rendezvous' is an invitation-only, fun-filled adventure testing both rider's skill and the mechanical preparation of their BMW motorcycles. The fun includes watching fellow riders crash (usually at very slow speed), riding over spectacular mountain trails and terrain, and the camaraderie of fellow BMW GS enthusiasts. Event participants are called 'Big Dogs,' as differentiated from BMW GS owners who purchased their motorcycles more for highway riding and polishing.
The Big Dogs tend to ride their motorcycles in extremes that include mud, dust, rocks, streams and over an occasional cliff. Forty-four participants from 15 states and Canada started the 1996 Big Dog Ride from Denver on September 26 with a 'warm-up ride' to Grand Junction, Colorado over several mountain passes via fire roads and jeep trails. All were on GS motorcycles, ranging from early '80s rally racing prototypes to the latest R l100 GS's. The majority of entrants rode RlOOGS models. Nearly all of the participants rode their motorcycles to Denver, then removed saddle bags, tank bag, mirrors and windshields before the event. BMW of Denver does a whopping post ride business selling replacement turn signals and other plastic parts. "

Klevington Harley Davidson Man

Harley Davidson Man: "Friday afternoon this young man was seated on his bike at the Tisdale 7-11, a minor part, a foot peg, had come off his bike and he was waiting while his 'buddy' was off getting the necessary repairs for them to continue their journey. I checked out his bike and he told me he was from Kelvington and agreed to have me take his picture. I told him about my friend Mike who had just purchased his new Harley and the adventures he is experiencing.

Last Friday Mike finished up classes in Kamloops and put on his leather and headed out to the coast. He took in the Simon and Bobby Dylan concert at GM place and below is his account of his return trip home.
Saturday afternoon I decided to head back. I stopped for gas in Chiliwack and this guy came up to me and said, 'It looks like a bunch of your buddies are having quite the time in Spences Bridge.'

At first I didn't get the connection but then I remembered seeing many Harley's on the road on Friday, and of course all Harley riders are 'buddies'. Since this was on the way home anyway I thought I would look for the gathering. Sure enough at the 'Log Cabin Pub' in Spences Bridge, there were about 50 bikes parked outside so I decided to venture in. It was great!!

More leather and camaraderie then any normal person could stand, but since I pretty well looked identical to them, unshaven face, graying hair and leather from head to toe, I fit in real well. I had supper, caught some of the hockey game, and enjoyed the company of some soul mates.

A couple came out as I was leaving to check out 'my ride'. Got lots of nice compliments as mine is really one of a kind for this area even though it is still very stock.

ride with a bike from Fairbanks HD. They always treated me really
right. I bought my leathers and chaps there, got them at a half price
sale. (which put them at about what I was willing to pay) Their shirts
always get a laugh, the back shows a panhead outside an outhouse with a
bear standing next to both. The wrench that was there when I was there was
really into panheads too, so that was an extra bonus in my eyes.

The roads up there really are as terrible as he described. The frost
heaves happen all the time, putting huge bumps in roads you thought were
level. When I was there, an HD rider was killed when he came around a
corner he knew well, but it had a huge new bump and he lost control and
went airborne into a tree."

It will lease the center to Fort Scott Community College, and Harley will provide 10 motorcycles in the first year.
The school also ready has cooperative agreements with John Deere and Caterpillar. And Pittsburg State has an agreement with Toyota to train auto technicians.
Pittsburg State is known for its expertise in technical education. It offers one of the few bachelor's degrees in automotive technology in the country and has operated the Kansas Technology Center since 1997.
The college worked with Harley to design the curriculum, which will include technical courses on engines, diagnostics and shop practices. Students will also have to take English, science and public speaking, and serve a paid internship as a dealership technician after their first year.
The schools and Harley hope the students will then pursue a bachelor's degree. Benny Suggs, director of dealer training for Harley, said the company wants to hire more people with college degrees who can become managers. Harley has more than 650 dealerships in the United States.

The Milwaukee-based motorcycle manufacturer said it is supporting the formal degree program because it needs people who are trained in both technical and management skills.
The program would be based in Frontenac. Students who finish the program will be able to transfer their credits to Pittsburg State University and earn a bachelor of applied science in technology with a focus on motorcycles.
'We're approaching this as an academic endeavor, in the respect that a student will follow a collegiate schedule,' said Steve Vergara, director of the program. 'Harley has come a long way in their image and the people that ride them.'"

"(Bolton Landing - AP) - Orange County Choppers, stars of the hit cable television show 'American Chopper,' have rolled into a quiet upstate resort town to sign autographs and show off their custom motorcycles.
Paul Teutul Senior and the rest of his clan arrived Wednesday night in Bolton Landing on the western shore of Lake George and plan to stay through the weekend."

"WEST FRANKFORT -- Two West Frankfort men think the television show 'American Chopper' has been a boon to the custom motorcycle industry and, if they have their way, Steelhorse Choppers of Franklin County may soon be as well known as its Orange County counterpart on the Discovery Channel's popular show.

David Batts and Terry Brooks of West Frankfort met when Batts was doing some custom lettering for Brooks' musical entertainment business. The men discovered they had a mutual love of motorcycles and bought some used bikes together at a local dealer."
